How to Properly Hold a DVD

Digital video discs, or DVDs, provide optical data storage on a thin polycarbonate disc that can be read by a laser in a DVD player or a computer. Because the shiny surface can be marred with fingerprints and smudges, it is important to hold a DVD properly to ensure it continues to work properly.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Remove a DVD from its case by lightly pushing on the center button of the case. Pry under the outside edges of the DVD with just your fingernails or fingertips.
Step2
Spread your hand open so that the tip of your thumb is against the outside edge of the DVD on one side and the fingertip of your middle finger, or whatever finger is comfortable for you, is against the outside edge across from your thumb. Lightly squeeze your thumb and finger together until they grasp the DVD, and lift it up.
Step3
Hold the DVD with your thumb and one or more fingers spanning the outside circumference of the DVD.
Step4
Put one finger through the center hole and carry it around that way if it is more comfortable. Carry multiple DVDs stacked on top of each other this way.
Step5
Avoid touching the back surface of the DVD where the information is stored. Fingerprints can make it difficult for the DVD player, computer or other electronic equipment to read the information. To properly clean a dirty DVD, wipe with a lint-free cloth in a radial direction--a straight line from the center of the disk towards the outside edge.
Step6
Take care not to scratch the surface of the DVD while you are holding it by accidentally brushing it up against something. DVDs are designed to be somewhat scratch resistant, and minor scratches can easily be corrected, but it is still better to avoid them whenever possible.
