Decide the angle and height of the crown molding. Before measuring for the crown molding you need decide the angle you are going to use for the crown molding. Low ceilings need a small angle on the crown molding and higher ceilings require a larger angle. A good rule of the thumb for the height of the crown is that it should be the same height as the baseboard.

Determine what parts of each room you are going to install crown molding. For instance, there may be walk-in closets, cupboards, or cabinet areas where you may not need to install crown molding.

Measure each room and each wall in the room for the crown molding. It is important to measure all the way to the wall on each section of the room. This may give you too much crown molding but it's better to have too much than too little.

Write down each measurement and then add up the total amount of feet required to cover the entire crown molding project. Be sure to round up to the next foot length.

Divide the total feet of crown molding you need by 16, which is the length in feet that that most place sell crown molding.
