Step 1
Start with clean skin. Make certain the skin on your eyelids and around your eyes is free of old makeup or greasy residue from eye makeup removers or moisturizers. Use a gentle cleanser on the eye area or wipe with an oil free remover product.
-
Step 2
Apply a light coat of foundation to the eyelid area. Just as liquid, creme or powder foundation gives your face a smooth surface for makeup to adhere, the same holds true for your eye area. Blend the foundation in to the skin surrounding your eyes with clean fingers or a foundation brush or sponge.
-
Step 3
Consider an eye shadow primer. If you have particularly oily skin or have a hard time getting your eye shadow to last throughout the day, consider investing in a product intended to anchor your eye shadow to help it last longer. Though these products are expensive, they are very effective in preventing creasing and smudging.
-
Step 4
Use high quality eye makeup. Cosmetics that are made with more concentrated pigments will wear longer than cheap versions that use more powdery filler. Mineral eye shadows contain high concentrations of pigment and are quite long lasting.

Step 5
Set your eye shadow with powder. Once you have applied your eye shadow, dust a translucent powder over your eye area to set the color, just as you would on your face. Follow the powder with your mascara for thick, full lashes.
