More and more Americans are going green. If you think you must have strong synthetic cleaners to make your home sparkle, remember that people were cleaning their homes long before modern products were invented. Natural cleaners are good for the environment and good for your family, but they're tough on dirt. Create a natural cleaning kit. You probably have most of the products in your kitchen pantry.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Clean and polish just about anything with baking soda. Mix 4 tbsp. with 1 qt. warm water to form a mildly abrasive cleaner. You can shine your kitchen and bathroom counter tops to perfection. Try sprinkling baking soda on carpet stains, wait a few minutes and vacuum. It's also an air freshener, and, unlike commercial products, actually gets rid of odors rather than masking the smell.
Step2
Cut grease with plain white vinegar. Since vinegar is acidic, it makes a fantastic cleaning agent and stops the growth of mold and bacteria at the same time. Soften lime deposits around faucets by covering them with paper towels soaked in vinegar. Wait an hour, and wipe dry. You can also use vinegar to mop wood floors.
Step3
Make your whole house smell clean with fragrant lemons. You can polish brass and copper with lemon juice, and grind lemon peel in your garbage disposal to deodorize it. Instead of using bleach to whiten dingy towels, secure lemon peel in cheesecloth and add it to the wash cycle.
Step4
Add a box of corn starch to your natural cleaning kit. It's a surprisingly effective cleaner. Shampoo and deodorize rugs and carpet with corn starch. Make your own liquid starch for ironing by mixing it with water.
Step5
Mix two parts olive oil with one part lemon juice in a container with a lid. Shake the mixture well, and use as it to polish furniture. Rub it in well, and wipe dry with a clean cloth.
Step6
Recycle a tin or wooden carrier from the flea market to use as a caddy for your natural cleaning kit.
