How to Change the Find in Page Sound in Firefox

Firefox's "Find in Page" sound can be an annoying addition to your web browsing experience. Luckily, there are ways to disable and change the "Find in Page" sound to suit your preference. Simply follow these tips to disable or customize the sound.

Instructions

    Disable the Automatic Sound

  1. Step 1

    Navigate to Firefox's address bar, type "about:config" and press "Enter."

  2. Step 2

    Type "typeahead" in the Filter field.

  3. Step 3

    Double-click on the "accessibility.typeaheadfind.enablesound" option. Verify that the line turns bold and the value has changed to "false," as this signifies that the sound has been disabled.

  4. Step 4

    Close all windows and restart the browser to enjoy a sound-free "Find in Page" function.

  5. Search for a New Find in Page Sound

  6. Step 1

    Visit websites that offer short .wav clips and pick one that you prefer. Short .wav files are best suited as a new "Find in Page" sound. Try to choose to .wav file that contains a single beep or, at most, a few beeps.

  7. Step 2

    Pay for the sound, if necessary.

  8. Step 3

    Create a .wav file if you can't find one that suits you. Use a sound editing program and your favorite song or splice a specific sound out of it. Save the file onto your computer as a .wav file.

  9. Change the Find in Page Sound

  10. Step 1

    Return to the "about:config" panel and double-click "accessibility.typeaheadfind.enablesound." Verify that the line's value has returned to "true" so that the sound is turned on again.

    Find the "accessibility.typeaheadfind.soundURL" line and double-click it.

  12. Step 3

    Enter the location of your new .wav file into the field.

  13. Step 4

    Restart the browser.

Tips & Warnings
  • Reset the default beep on your Firefox browser by right-clicking on "accessibility.typeaheadfind.soundURL" and choosing "Reset."
