If you're looking for extra security for your Thunderbird email program, consider setting a Master Password. Master Passwords keep every Thunderbird session secure by prompting you for your Master Password and encrypting your individual email accounts' passwords.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Open the Thunderbird email program.

  2. Step 2

Select "Tools" and "Options" from the program's menu.

  3. Step 3

Choose the "Privacy" icon and select the "Passwords" tab under it.

  4. Step 4

Identify the "Use a Master Password to Encrypt Stored Passwords" portion on the tab and check it.

  5. Step 5

Click on "Set Master Password…" and enter your chosen Master Password in the fields. Choose a Master Password that you can easily remember, as this password protects your other passwords. Use the "Password Quality Meter" to check your password's security. As your password choice become more secure, the blue meter will extend to the right.

  6. Step 6

Press "OK" when you're satisfied with your Master Password choice and its security.

  7. Step 7

Be ready to supply your Master Password at any time. Thunderbird asks users for a Master Password regularly to ensure that only authenticated users access the program.

Tips & Warnings
  • The most secure Master Passwords include combinations of numbers, letters and symbols.
  • Resetting a Master Password may result in a loss of previously stored data, including passwords that were once protected by the Master Password. Make sure you have the passwords for all of the email accounts accessed through Thunderbird before attempting to reset the Master Password.
  • You will need to supply the Master Password to view individual email account passwords after the Master Password has been set.
