Mozilla Thunderbird's attachments icons can seem to take up a lot of space on a Windows machine. By making attachment icons smaller, you can clean up your Thunderbird windows and make more space in your message display.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Open the Thunderbird application.

  2. Step 2

Select "Tools" and "Options" from the program's menu. Choose the "Advanced" icon and the "General" tab. Identify the "Advanced Configuration" setting at the bottom of the tab and click on "Config Editor…"

  3. Step 3

Allow the "about: config" menu to load. After it has completely finished, type "mailnews.attachments.display.largeView" in the filter field and press "Show All."

  4. Step 4

Verify that the result's value is set to "True." Double-click on the value until "False" shows as the value.

  5. Step 5

Exit out of the about:config menu and restart Mozilla Thunderbird.

Tips & Warnings
  • Thunderbird attachments are not locally saved to your computer until you click on them and choose to save it or detach it from the rest of the message. Making your Mozilla Thunderbird icons smaller may make the icons harder to see. Remember that icons represent attachments and that if you delete a message without saving or detaching the attachment, the attachments will be deleted for good.
