How to Save Dogs in Shelters

There are thousands of dogs in shelters around the country. Contact your local Humane Society to find out what you can do to help or what that organization needs in particular. Many times, these shelters are dependent on donations to feed, provide medical treatment to and care for the dogs in the shelters.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Call the dog shelters and find out what they are in desperate need for. This may be food, toys, or health supplies including medications. Purchase these items or donate what you may have on hand already. Dogs are often euthanized because shelters don't have supplies.

  2. Step 2

Volunteer. One of the best ways to save dogs is to help shelters care for them on a daily basis. Volunteers can help by playing with the dogs, brushing and bathing them as well as cleaning up after them. Each location has different requirements on volunteers.

  3. Step 3

Start a fundraiser. Work with local schools, churches or community sponsors (including area businesses) to raise funds for the dog shelters. While raising funds for the shelter itself, market the dogs in the shelter as dogs looking for new homes. Put names and pictures of each dog out there, to attract interested individuals.

  4. Step 4

Build a website and market it locally. Promote dogs that need to be saved from local shelters. Add photos, detailed information and contact information for the dog shelter on the website so visitors can meet and pick up the animal for adoption.

  5. Step 5

Ask local businesses to sponsor one pet a month in their organization by leaving the pet's information on a flyer, asking for adoption from customers. Include a jar to collect change for the animal shelter as well.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure the local dogs shelter knows what you are doing for them, as they may need to approve the actions you take.
