How to Make a Headboard Out of Window Shutters

Here is an easy-to-make headboard using recycled window shutters. This project is ideal for a shabby chic decor or for adding some country charm to a bedroom. It can also be incorporated into a casual beach theme. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of your bed. This will help you select shutters that are wide enough for the bed.

    • 2

Choose enough shutters to fit the width of your bed. If they are slightly wider than the bed, that's okay. You won't likely find a perfect fit anyway.

    • 3

Decide if you are going to paint the shutters or leave them as is. If you are going to sand and paint the shutters, wear a protective mask and gloves to prevent inhaling lead paint particles. If you are leaving the shutters as it, spray them with a clear coating of shellac or polyurethane, to keep any lead paint from flaking off. This is especially important if you are using them in a child's bedroom.

    • 4

Mark the area on the wall where you want to hang the shutters. Then screw in bolts or heavy duty sheetrock screws. These will support the hanging brackets on the back of the shutters.

    • 5

Lay the shutters face down, side by side on the floor. Attach a strip of wood across the top and the bottom, to hold the shutters in place. Then attach hanging brackets across the top piece of wood.

    • 6

Hang the shutter headboard on the wall so the bottom of the shutters meets the top of the mattress.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you can't find quality used window shutters, purchase new ones (wooden, not plastic) and paint them yourself. You can distress them with a crackling finish for an aged effect.
