1
Decide whether you are ready to live alone or if you want to share your apartment with others. If you decide on sharing, find a close friend or two. If you can't afford to pay the rent yourself you'll have to find roommates.
-
2
Check out apartments that are in your area if you don't want to live too far from your previous home. You don't have to live in an apartment--it can be a home that is renting an apartment. If you are moving out of your home for work purposes or for college you may have to find a place that is far from home.

Look on the Internet to find apartments in the new location. Alternatively, if you are moving for a job, you may be able to get information from the employer about apartments in the area you will be moving too. In addition, if it is for college, the housing department at the school may be able to give you listings of apartments in the area.

Set up a budget. Include the prices you can afford for rent. This will give you a starting point for finding the right apartment for yourself. Include the amounts for utilities and other necessary costs that you will have to pay each month when you are living on your own--food, electric, gas and phone.

5
Figure out what you have that you can take with you. Most parents will let you take the things that are in your room and they may have other things that you can use too. Before you buy anything for your apartment check to see what may be available to you for free.

Sign a lease--after reading it carefully--pay the fees that are required, rent a truck, gather all your stuff and move into your first apartment.
