Windows XP is a more complete operating system than Windows 98. Windows 98 is a stable operating system built on top of the DOSS platform. Windows XP is built on its own stand-alone NT platform and adds user-friendliness and speedier file accessibility. Windows XP also has a software compatibility program running in the background, which allows Windows 98 applications to migrate smoothly to Windows XP.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Run Disk Defragmenter on the Hard Drive. Go to "Start," "All Programs," "Accessories," "System Tools" and "Disk Defragmenter" to access it. This process reorganizes the file system. Get off on the right foot in the process of moving files around.
Step2
Insert the Windows XP Upgrade disc into the CD or DVD drive. When prompted, choose the "Upgrade" option.
Step3
Choose not to upgrade your file system from FAT 32 to NTFS during installation. Windows XP runs fine on either file system. You can store more information on an NTFS file system and can upgrade to it later, but once you make the change, you can't roll back to Windows 98 if XP has issues.
Step4
Answer the questions that help windows finalize installation after the system reboots. Upon completion you come to the user sign in screen from which you can enter your new desktop.
Step5
Activate and register Windows once installation is complete if you have an Internet connection. You have 30 days to activate your Windows installation.
Step6
Update Windows online. You want to have the latest updates to keep your system safe and running in the best shape it possibly can.
Step7
Run Disk Defragmenter once more to clean up your system. Hard drives are very fragmented after an upgrade and running it will give your system the opportunity to perform at its best.
