How to Install Wall-Hung Office Systems

If you have the wall space, a wall-hung office system can be a great way to clear your desktop and keep often used tools, files and reference materials immediately at hand. This gives you more space to layout a project you're working on, or just keep your workspace clutter-free.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine which wall is the best place to hang your organization system. If you're mounting a telephone or lamp, be sure there's a wall plug nearby. Some wall-hung system components may stick out of from the wall, so be sure to leave enough space.

  2. Step 2

Decide whether you prefer a closed shelf, pegboard, open plastic grid or slatwall system. The components are specific to each and not interchangeable. Figure out how you want to organize your materials and how much weight your wall can carry, as this will guide your decision.

  3. Step 3

Begin by installing any pre-mounting support hardware for the system's backboard, such as toggle bolts, drywall anchors or spacers for pegboards.

  4. Step 4

Follow the instructions packaged with the system to properly mount the backboard to the wall.

  5. Step 5

Mount the containers or shelves you chose, or the one that came with the system, on the backboard according to the manufacturer's instructions.

  6. Step 6

Use your wall-hung office system to de-clutter your workspace. Fill containers or shelves with items that used to be on your desktop or in your drawers.

Tips & Warnings
  • While containers may not be interchangeable across system styles, they often work across different brands of the same style that use similar mounting systems.
  • Garage sales, hardware stores and used office product stores may all be sources for components that work with your system. Some kitchen and tool storage system components may also work on same-style office system backboards.
