How to Make a Ninja Star out of an Old CD

Shuriken, or a ninja star, are a traditional Japanese weapon. They're thrown or held in the hand as a striking weapon. Modern ninja stars are typically made of stainless steel and come in various shapes and sizes. You can make your own ninja star out of an old CD, if you'd like a fun alternative to real weapons.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw the shape of your star onto a CD with a permanent marker. Use a ruler to make the lines straight. Experiment with the shape of the drawing to make your throwing stars more artistic or aerodynamic.

    • 2

Fill a sink or bowl with hot water. Place your CD into the hot water and let it sit for about 5 minutes. Soaking the CD will soften the plastic so it'll be easier to cut.

    • 3

Cut along the edges of the star that you already drew onto the CD. Cut slowly and carefully, because CDs are prone to cracking while being cut.

    • 4

Tape coins to the center of the finished ninja star to weight it so it'll throw straight.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use an old CD that's scratched and will no longer play. Buy a package of new blank CDs if you want to make a lot of ninja stars.

  • Use a razor blade to shave any labeling off of the CD if you want your ninja star to be clear.

  • Color the stars with permanent markers if you'd like to add an artistic touch.

  • Throwing stars are illegal in many states and countries.

  • Don't throw ninja stars at people or animals because they're sharp and can cause serious injuries.

Problem #1 The disk is made of two layers. the second you put the disk in hot water the glue starts to wear away so when you cut the disk the two layers separate. i tried using hot melt glue to stick them back together but it was too heavy with one coin so i removed the coin. It flew much better. Problem #2 The disk is too brittle to throw around like a ninja star. Mine broke on the first throw. The second throw slightly softer shattered the disk into a million pieces so i had to spend a half hour making sure i picked every bit up. The only use for this is a display star only. to messy otherwise.
