How to Sew a Star Struck Quilt

The star struck quilt is a popular pattern. When you look at the finished quilt, it looks incredibly difficult. However, even a novice quilter can easily make this quilt. As with all quilts, the star struck quilt takes time and patience, but it is certainly not difficult.

Making the Quilt Blocks

1. Sew light and dark strips of fabric together. Their width depends on how big you want the blocks to be. Each color strip should be about half of the size that you want the square to end up. Remember to add some width for seam allowance. Sew many strips for a full size quilt.

2. Open the fabric strips and iron flat, with the seam going towards the dark side. Cut this fabric into squares so that each square is half dark and half light. The number of squares needed depends on the size of the squares and the size of the quilt. As you cut the squares, lay them out on the floor to determine how many you need.

3. Cut several smaller squares in light colors and several squares in dark colors. These should be half the size of your larger square with a half inch added for seam allowance. For example, if your large squares are 4 inches, cut these squares at 2 ½ inches. You need one dark square and one light square for each of your large, half and half squares.

4. Place a dark smaller square facedown on the light-colored stripe of the large square. The right sides of the fabric should touch. Starting in the corner where light and dark meet, sew on the diagonal. Open the fabric and iron it flat. Trim any extra fabric from the edges.

5. Repeat Step 4. This time, use a light-colored small square over the dark part of the bigger square. The small squares should be on opposite corners.

Making the Full Quilt

6. Choose four squares and lay them out in front of you. Match them up so that a light-colored star forms in the middle.

7. Place the right sides of the top two pieces together and sew them. Repeat with the bottom two pieces. When you're finished sewing, iron flat.

8. Sew the top and bottom pieces together. You should now have one large quilt block.

9. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 until you have sewn all of the blocks. You will have many.

10. Piece all of the blocks together to form the star struck quilt. Arrange the blocks so that the quilt is as long and as wide as you like.

11. Add a border after all the pieces have been sewn together. Then, you can add batting and a back, and quilt everything together.

Tips & Warnings

• Carefully plan how much fabric you need to cut in order to make the quilt size that you want. It's a pain to be almost finished and realize you are a few squares short.
