How to Make a Video Relay Call

Video relay companies provide an exciting bridge between deaf, hard of hearing and hearing phone users. There are a variety of options for video relay calls and several types of devices can be used to make those calls. Each video relay company provides different types of services. Pick a company that you are comfortable with.

Instructions

Step1
Turn on the video relay device attached to your television or computer. Check to make sure you can view yourself in the screen.
Step2
Select the video relay company that you want to place the video relay call through. Click to connect with that company.
Step3
Type in the phone number of the person you want to call. Select "VCO" to make a voice-carry-over call to use your own voice to talk directly to the person being called. Type in the phone number of the phone you will use for voice-carry-over.
Step4
Wait for the interpreter to appear on the screen. Inform the interpreter of any call instructions or communication assistance needed.
Step5
Connect with the person you are calling and engage in the conversation. Watch the interpreter to understand what the other person is saying. Communicate using sign language or your own voice via VCO.
Step6
Let the interpreter know when the conversation is completed and when to hang up.
Step7
Begin another phone call if desired or turn off the videophone when finished.

Tips & Warnings

  • Adjust the contrast so that the picture is clear. Increase the lighting if the picture is too dim.
