Origami snowflakes are great for dressing up classroom windows in the winter months and provide a quick task to entertain students. The classroom recycling bin is the perfect place to find paper for the snowflakes. Jot down the steps below and add making origami snowflakes to your holiday season to do list.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Place a dinner plate upside down on a plain piece of paper and draw around it. You can of course use a compass and pencil to draw the circle but a plate in the kitchen is usually easier to find than a compass.

  2. Step 2

Cut out the circle with a pair of scissors. Use adult supervision when children are making snowflakes.

  3. Step 3

Fold the paper circle in half creating a sharp crease with the flat edge of a ruler or your thumb. The cleaner the folds the easier the cutting tasks.

  4. Step 4

Fold the paper in half again and again and if you can. The result should be a thick triangle of paper folded as flatly as possible with all the sides and edges meeting up. Less folds means less intricacy of snowflake design.

  5. Step 5

Use sharp scissors to cut shapes out of the folded paper. Small circles, triangles, squares and matchstick shapes work best. Be careful not to cut the entire way across the triangle of any side of the triangle.

  6. Step 6

Pull out the paper shapes as you cut. The more shapes you use, the more intricate the design.

  7. Step 7

Open the paper back up by unfolding carefully until a complete circle is visible. This is your origami snowflake.

on 1/7/2009 Not origami. Neat idea, but traditional origami consists of merely folding the paper.
