It isn't easy being a baby, and getting those brand new teeth can be extremely uncomfortable. Unfortunately, commercial teething gels are often full of chemicals and preservatives. You can make natural, preservative-free teething gels in your own kitchen that will work just as well as commercial gels, and will be soothing to baby's sore gums. Give it a try, and you and your baby will both feel better.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • 2 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil or glycerin
  • 2 drops essential oil of clove
  • Small plastic bottle, sterilized
Step1
Place the extra virgin olive oil into a small, sterile plastic bottle and add the essential oil of clove.
Step2
Shake the natural clove teething gel thoroughly to mix.
Step3
Wash your hands and place a tiny amount of natural clove teething gel to your index finger. Use your finger to swab a bit of gel onto the baby's gums.
Step4
Use natural clove teething gel as needed for sore gums. Shake before each use.

Tips & Warnings

  • While natural clove teething gel is soothing for babies, it can also be helpful for adults with tooth pain.
  • Glycerin is sweet and may be more palatable to baby than extra virgin olive oil. If your baby doesn't like the taste of either, vegetable oil can also be substituted.
  • Test the natural clove essential oil on your own tongue before giving it to the baby. If you think it's too strong, dilute it with a bit more oil. This is especially important for very young infants.
