How to Take Mineral Oil for Constipation

While there are different laxatives available that relieve constipation, mineral oil is cheap and easy to find. It works by forming a layer of lubrication around the stool so that it slides more easily through the colon. It also coats the stool, which prevents water from escaping back into the body, creating a softer stool texture. Softer stools pass out of the body more easily.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Contact your doctor's office and ask for the correct dosage information. Physicians calculate dosage based on your age, weight and general health.

  2. Step 2

Take the mineral oil at bedtime, the best time of day to take most laxatives. In most cases, a bowel movement will occur in 6 to 8 hours.

  3. Step 3

Pour the oil into a medicine dose cup or measuring spoon for precise measurement. Don't use a regular kitchen spoon.

  4. Step 4

Swallow the mineral oil alone or mix it into juice or tea. Follow the dose with a full 8 oz. glass of water.

  5. Step 5

Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water throughout the day for as long as you use mineral oil for constipation.

Tips & Warnings
  • Long term use of mineral oil causes vitamin deficiency. Don't take it for more than 7 days unless directed by your doctor.
  • Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before beginning treatment with mineral oil. It may interfere with the absorption and effectiveness of some medications.
  • Chronic constipation may be a sign of a serious underlying medical condition. Consult your doctor if your constipation continues or if you fail to have a bowel movement after taking laxatives, including mineral oil.
