How to Change Autorun Settings in Windows Vista

The autorun settings in Windows Vista control what your computer does each time you insert removable media. Whether it's a CD, a DVD or an external hard drive, Windows has pre-programmed settings that decide whether to rip, burn, explore or ignore it once it's connected. Changing these settings gives you more control over your Windows experience, and makes managing your media collection much easier.

    Instructions

      • 1

Open the Control Panel. Unless you've added its shortcut to your Desktop, do this by clicking its link in the Start Menu.

      • 2

Select "Hardware and Sound" from the main options listed in the Control Panel. If you're using the "Classic View" Control Panel, simply click on the icon labeled "Auto Play."

      • 3

Click on the "Auto Play" tab to open the autorun settings panel.

      • 4

Use the drop-down menus to select how Vista handles the different kinds of removable media. If you'd rather disable Autorun completely, choose "Take No Action" from each of the menus.

      • 5

Press "Save" to apply the changes you made and return to the Control Panel.

      • 6

Run a test to make sure Autorun changed the way you wanted it to. If one of the settings isn't working right, reopen the Auto Play control panel and double-check its action.

    Tips & Warnings

    • You can also use Autorun to install or run games every time you insert their discs into your computer. Look for the "Software and Games" field under the Auto Play panel to adjust these settings.

    • Hold down the "Shift" button to open Auto Play regardless of its default settings.
