Braces are an orthodontic device used to straighten unaligned teeth and correct bite problems. There are different courses of treatment with braces used that depend on the severity of your dental problems. Learn how to prepare for braces to ease your mind.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Know that the length of time you need to wear braces depends on the severity of your orthodontic problem. For a minor problem, you may need to wear braces for 6 months; severe problems may require braces to be worn for up to 30 months.

  2. Step 2

Expect a series of appointments with your orthodontist to properly prepare for braces. At your first visit, the doctor takes x-rays of your mouth to diagnose the extent of your problem. At your following visit, expect a mold to be taken of your teeth for the orthodontist to use as he plans your unique course of treatment.

  3. Step 3

Understand that sometimes before braces can be placed on your teeth, other procedures may have to be done to your mouth to aid in the treatment. Appliances such as retainers may be used to widen the palate and teeth may need to be extracted to make room for shifting teeth.

  4. Step 4

Feel a little pain when the braces are first placed on your teeth. The braces may irritate your gums and when tightened to slowly shift the teeth, the braces can cause discomfort for a day or so.

  5. Step 5

Go to your orthodontic appointments every 4 to 6 weeks for the tightening of your braces and other adjustments. Call your orthodontist if a wire on your braces brakes or if you are in severe pain for longer than 2 to 3 days.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep dental wax with you at all times to place on brackets and wires that irritate your gums.
  • Always follow the instructions given by your orthodontist when it comes to the care of your braces and your course of treatment. Brush your teeth often to remove debris from the braces and wear rubberbands--if needed--as often as you are instructed.
