How to Make a Hoboken

Hoboken, New Jersey, claims to be the home of the ice cream cone, but that title is open to debate. It's claim to the fountain drink Hoboken, however, is genuine. According to legend, angry Longshoremen would lob pineapples at people who gave offense, and the Hoboken lives up to its name with its unique combination of chocolate and pineapple juice. If you can't make the drive to Hoboken to enjoy the original, you can make your own at home.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Soda fountain glass
  • Ice cream scoop
  • Soda straw
  • Iced teaspoon
  • Pineapple chunks
  • Sweetened pineapple juice
  • Chocolate ice cream
  • Canned whipped cream
  • Maraschino cherry

Step1
Fill your glass halfway with pineapple juice. An old-fashioned soda fountain glass adds an authentic touch to the experience.
Step2
Add a half-dozen pineapple chunks followed by one or two scoops of chocolate ice cream. Make the scoop as round as possible. Drop it dead center, but gently so that the pineapple juice doesn't splash over the side.
Step3
Fill the rest of the glass with pineapple juice. Add more pineapple chunks if you want. This is your drink.
Step4
Top the drink with whipped cream. Canned whipped cream works best because you can build it up in a spiral. Drop the cherry on top, or garnish with one last piece of pineapple.
Step5
Spoon the ice cream with a sip of pineapple juice. Iced teaspoons work best because you can get to the bottom of the glass. Resist the temptation to blend the ingredients; a Hoboken isn't a milk shake. Hold off on the soda straw until the last bit of ice cream is gone.
