Braiding with more than three strands can make a complex and attractive braid for hair or crafting. Follow these instructions to make a braid with any even number of strands.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Pick an even number of strands, using at least four strands. Secure the strands of material to an anchor. Separate the strands and locate the middle of the bunch.

  2. Step 2

Pick up the strand on the far right. Lay it over all the strands to the right of the middle. For example, if you are braiding with six strands, you should lay the far right strand over the fourth and fifth strands. The far right strand is now in the position just to the right of the middle.

  3. Step 3

Take the strand that is second from the left and move it to the left. Lay it over all the strands to its right, so that it is now in the far right position.

  4. Step 4

Locate the middle of the bunch. Take the far left strand and lay it over all the strands on the left side of the middle. If you are braiding with six strands, lay the far left strand over the second and third strands. The far left strand is now the first strand to the left of the middle.

  5. Step 5

Repeat until you complete the braid. If you are braiding hair, secure the end with a clip or band at least 1 inch from the bottom. If you are braiding string or yarn, make one final knot using all the strands.
