How to Get Real Time Stock Updates in Excel

If you want to keep track of your stock prices without the risk of your boss catching you at your browser, keep track with an Excel spreadsheet. You can add live stock quotes and follow the news for your stock while appearing to crunch the numbers for your office.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install ESQuotes shareware. The feed works on Windows computers only.

    • 2

Open the ESQuotes manager application and choose the program and feed settings. The Options tab lets you choose which exchange to follow and set price quotes. Select which data to track by clicking on the "Options" tab and checking the options you want to see.

    • 3

Click on the "Examples" tab to find the different Excel spreadsheets available. Open the file "ESQBlank."

    • 4

Find Row D, Cell 26. In the range of cells from 26 to 33, enter the following (ignore commas and quotation marks): "IXIC," "DJI," "CGI," "WTR," "LEN," "MSA," "OCR," "IVC." In Row E enter the following data for each of the cells you entered in Row D: =HYPERLINK(ESQNewsLink(CELLNUMBER,0),ESQNewsHead(CELLNUMBER,0)&" ("&esqnewsdate(CELLNUMBER,0)&")"). For instance, E26 would read: =HYPERLINK(ESQNewsLink(D26,0),ESQNewsHead(D26,0)&" ("&esqnewsdate(D26,0)&")")

Save your spreadsheet and type F9. The worksheet will update with the latest information on any stock you want to review. You can update at any time with the F9 command.

Tips & Warnings

  • ESQuotes serves as an RSS news reader. In addition to the sample sheet, the developer provides with a basic spreadsheet, an additional spreadsheet with examples for stocks, funds and indexes, and a spreadsheet with international exchange rates. You can also work with a blank spreadsheet to create your own functions with the Visual Basic editor.
