How to Donate Computer Power to SETI

If you've ever wondered if there really are aliens, or are convinced there are, this is a project for you. The SETI extraterrestrial intelligence search is a program that uses home computers to sift through radio telescope data for signs of intelligent life in the universe.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer
  • Internet connection

Step1
Download the BOINC computer software that the project requires to operate their project from your home computer (see Resources).
Step2
Read the rules and regulations along with the system requirements before downloading the program. Confirm you have enough memory and compatible operating system.
Step3
Open your BOINC project manager window and select "Attach to Project." Follow the attach wizard to receive your first project.
Step4
Type in URL when asked to select a project. BOINC serves as the software for several projects. You must specify the request to work on the SETI project (see Resources).
Step5
Create a user account. Include your email address to set up your account with BOINC.
Step6
Select "Next" after creating your account, and SETI attaches your first project to your computer. Allow the project to work while your computer is idle. It's set up to run as your computer's screensaver.
Step7
Observe the system automatically begin a new download, after the work on the first project finishes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Control how much of your computer the SETI project uses, and when it uses it by adjusting the controls in the project manager.
  • Track the work as the SETI at the home screensaver shows all the statistics along with a screensaver that gives you an idea of the work in progress.
  • You must own the computer for installation of the SETI software or have administrative rights. Unless you have permission from your employer, it's illegal to operate SETI at home on a work computer.
