How to Win a School Halloween Costume Contest

If your school holds a costume contest as part of its Halloween celebration, increase your chances of wining a prize by choosing an outfit that showcases your imagination and that will catch a judge's eye. Use these suggestions to develop one that's interesting and unforgettable.

Instructions

    • 1

Discover fun ideas for children's costumes at Halloween shops and on family craft websites. Create an original costume rather than buying one, however. While four other girls may show up wearing a store-bought Belle costume, for example, you'll be the only princess in a handmade pink and purple, jeweled gown. Impress judges with your craftsmanship and creativity (see Resources).

    • 2

Ask what criteria the judges use to select the winners or study the costumes that won in previous years. If they never single out students who dress as costume characters, for example, you probably won't stand a chance if you dress up as Bart Simpson.

    • 3

Choose a costume that's appropriate for school so the judges won't disqualify you from the contest. Stay away from provocative outfits, costumes that make fun of other people or characters that are too frightening. Most schools won't allow masks, makeup effects or fake blood, for example.

    • 4

Pick characters that the teachers and judges will recognize. If you dress as an obscure comic book character, for example, they might not realize how accurate your costume is or what a great job you've done assembling the perfect accessories.

    • 5

Enter the contest as a team, dressing up with your friends to become famous duos or trios like the Mario Brothers or the Three Little Pigs. You'll impress the judges with your teamwork.

    • 6

Be enthusiastic as you walk in the costume parade, getting into character as much as possible. If you're upbeat and get the other students in the audience to laugh, clap or cheer for you, the judges are bound to notice you.
