Kids love playing on gym equipment so if you run a daycare or have several children of your own, you might want to set up a play gym. You can construct a full gym outdoors, then stand back and watch them enjoy.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use mats for outdoor playing so kids can tumble and roll safely. Make sure the mats are away from any structures, walls or stairs so the kids don't bump into anything.

  2. Step 2

Place plastic tubes in the yard for kids to climb through. Make sure some are solid for mysterious climbing and some are open to let the light in so kids aren't crawling in the dark.

  3. Step 3

Buy fabric tubes for your backyard gym. Set them on the ground on grass or sand so kids don't hurt their knees. You can place them around the yard or together in the center so kids can crawl from one to another.

  4. Step 4

Set up a child-safe slide. It should have solid, wide steps with banisters so kids can climb safely. Place the bottom of the slide on wooden chips, grass or sand so kids can slide off the bottom without hurting themselves.

  5. Step 5

Add swings the yard. Make sure you have several so a few kids can swing at once. Pick swings with comfortable seats and handles that are easy to grip. Include baby swings with safety bars and harnesses so little ones can swing without falling off.

  6. Step 6

Include a small climbing structure but make sure it isn't too high. Secure it to the ground and make sure it is over wood chips, grass or mats.

Tips & Warnings
  • Pick colorful pieces for your play gym which will catch kids' attention.
  • Clean the play gym regularly so kids don't become ill from passing germs.
  • Never leave kids unattended. It only takes seconds to fall.
