An old door makes the perfect impromptu office desk. It is easy and inexpensive to make and will add a bit of country charm to any home office. This project may be adapted for coffee tables, kitchen tables or counter tops.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Old interior wooden door
  • Two 2-drawer filing cabinets
  • Tempered glass cut to size
  1. Step 1

Look for an old door that is not warped and will lay flat. The best types of doors for this project are interior doors, which have not been battered by the elements. Select traditional wooden panel doors that are common in older homes.

  2. Step 2

Remove all the hardware from the door, including doorknobs, hinges and locks.

  3. Step 3

Wash the entire door down with warm soapy water to remove any dust and dirt.

  4. Step 4

Purchase two two-drawer filing cabinets and lay the door across the tops of the cabinet, with one end on each cabinet.

  5. Step 5

Top the door with a piece of tempered glass cut to size. You can order a custom piece of glass at any glass shop.

Tips & Warnings
  • Customize your old door-desk by spray painting the filing cabinets a fun color to match your office.
  • Embellish the panel insets of the door with decoupage or stenciled designs for a little extra detail before covering it with the glass top.
  • Instead of filing cabinets you can use recycled table legs from an old dining table to support the door.
  • If you plan to sand and paint the old door before turning it into a desk, work in a well ventilated area. Also keep children away, as old doors may very likely have lead paint on them.
