How to Make a Helmet Cam

A helmet cam can be useful in many situations. For keeping record of an important event when it's important to keep the hands free, a helmet cam is a solid choice. A helmet cam isn't hard to make and is light enough to wear for hours at a time. Follow these easy steps to make a hands-free helmet cam.

Things You'll Need

• Small, lightweight, hand-held video camera
• Bicycle helmet
• One 1/4-inch bolt 2 inches long
• 10 1.5-inch-wide washers
• Foam padding
• Heavy duty glue

Instructions

1. Find the top, center-most air hole on a bicycle helmet. This is where your small, lightweight, hand held video camera will be attached.

2. Slide two or three 1.5-inch-wide washers onto a 1/4-inch bolt that is 2 inches long.

3. Place the bolt in the air hole from the inside of the bicycle helmet with the washers bracketing the bolt from the inside. Bracket the bolt from the outside of the helmet with two or three more washers.

4. Screw the bolt into the video camera's tripod mount.

5. Experiment with the number of washers bracketing the bolt until you feel you have the tightest, and therefore safest, possible fit for your video camera on the bicycle helmet.

6. Use heavy duty glue to attach foam padding to the inside of the bicycle helmet over the bolt so that your head is protected from the bolt.

7. Strap your new helmet cam securely to your head, and enjoy the freedom of a hands free video experience.
