How to Make a Feed Scoop

It's easy to think you are giving your pets the correct amount of food, but unless you weigh it every day, you probably are overfeeding or underfeeding them. The easiest way to make sure your pet is getting the correct amount of food for their weight is to make a feed scoop that holds the exact amount of feed for them.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Plastic container
  • Food scale
  • Measuring cup
  • Sharp knife
  • Permanent marker
Step1
Determine the correct amount of dry food for your pet's daily nutrition. You may need to weigh your pet to be sure.
Step2
Look around your house for a plastic container big enough to hold the pet food. Look at disposable containers that hold oleo or something similar rather than using a plastic container you purchased. If you need a large amount of food, consider a plastic milk carton in either a gallon or half-gallon size.
Step3
Put the correct amount of food into the container. Weigh the food with a food scale or measure it in a measuring cup to make sure it is the correct amount.
Step4
Level the food in the container. Draw a line on the inside of the container with a permanent marker to indicate the fill line. You can use the feed scoop as it is at this point or continue.
Step5
Use the sharp knife to cut off any excess plastic. Use the line you drew in Step 4 as your guide. Each time you feed your pet just fill the feed scoop level with pet food.
Step6
Cut the bottom out of a plastic milk carton. Secure the lid firmly on the top of the carton. Measure the amount of feed needed into the top of the carton. Mark that line with the permanent marker. Cut the bottom section of the milk carton off that you don't need. The handle makes it easy to dip the food out of the bag.
