How to Do a Pirouette

A pirouette is a spin done on one foot, which completely turns the body in a controlled manner. Pirouette turns are single, double, triple and sometimes more rotations. Ballet uses pirouettes more than any other dance, but jazz and modern dancing also use them with different variations.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a space that is clear and open. The floor should be non-stick and smooth.

    • 2

Place one foot in front of the other and move them 1 1/2 feet apart, with the toes pointing out. Bend your knees a third of the way to position yourself in fourth position or plie.

    • 3

Hold your arm that's at the side of the body of the back foot out to the front with the fingertips pointing out. Your arm should have a curve to it, as if you're holding a beach ball. Hold your other arm out to the side.

    • 4

Push down with your legs to straighten while the arm out in front straightens. Turn your torso clockwise.

    • 5

Raise up to your toes on the front leg while your knee straightens. Pick up your back leg and place your foot on the front leg just above the knee. Bring your arms together as if you're holding a ball. Start turning.

    • 6

Find a spot on the wall with your eyes and keep it visual as you start to turn. In order to maintain the spot, turn your head quickly to locate the spot.

    • 7

Lower your foot to the floor behind the supporting leg after you complete a full rotation. Relax the arms.

Tips & Warnings

  • The momentum of the turn comes from the bend of the knees and the position of the arms.

  • Be sure to center your body over your supporting leg to complete a pirouette. Align your hips with your shoulders while you engage your back muscles for strength.
