An Englishman's loop is a simple loop that was originally used in fishing but is no longer used for that purpose because it tends to slip with nylon. However, it is still used to provide a secure loop with light rope and twine.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Place the rope horizontally so that the working end is on the right and the standing end is on the left. Make an overhand loop so that the working end is on top of the standing end.

  2. Step 2

Push the working end through the loop made in Step 1 from below and pull it out of the loop away from the standing end. This will make an overhand knot we will call overhand knot A.

  3. Step 3

Make a loop of the desired size and bring the working end back through overhand knot A. Pull the working end out from under the knot and cross it over the standing end. Tighten the knot securely without changing the size of the loop.

  4. Step 4

Bend the working end under the standing end and pull it up from the other side. Bring the working end over the standing end and the loop just made. Pull the working end through the loop from below. This should result in an overhand knot tied around the rope's standing end that we will call overhand knot B.

  5. Step 5

Snug overhand knot B up to overhand knot A and tighten. Note that overhand knot B serves as a stopper knot for the loop.
