How to Tie a Dropper Loop

A dropper loop makes a loop in the middle of a line and fishermen use it to create a loop from which an additional fly may be attached. The primary advantage of a dropper loop over other loops of this type is that a dropper loop is less prone to tangling.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a long narrow loop about 6 inches long. Call the end of the line that is on top line A and the part that is on the bottom line B. You will be tying this knot without using either end of the line.

    • 2

Take the middle of line B and pull it over a portion of line A to create a small opening that is not part of the loop. Wrap the loop created in Step 1 around both lines without allowing the opening just created to close.

    • 3

Base the number of twists on the size of the line with more wraps being required for small line. Most monofilament lines will be secure with about six twists.

    • 4

Form a narrow loop from the larger one created in Step 1 and pass it through the opening in the twists created in Step 2. This loop will become the final dropper loop so you should adjust its size accordingly.

    • 5

Lubricate the knot to prevent overheating and hold one end of the line in each hand. Hold the dropper loop in your teeth to maintain the desired size as you carefully pull both ends to tighten the knot.
