A double pile hitch is a more secure version of the pile hitch. It is used to tie a rope to a post or some other fixed object. The double pile hitch is easy to make but requires that you have access to one end of the post.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Tie a double pile hitch in the bight. This method does not require access to either end of the rope, making it convenient to use.

  2. Step 2

Assume for the purpose of demonstration that you will be tying the rope to a vertical post and that you have access to the top of the post.

  3. Step 3

Form a long bight of rope and pass it around to the right side of the post. Bring the bight back around to the left side. Wrap the bight around the right side of the post once again so that it is below the previous wrapping.

  4. Step 4

Pull the bight around to the front of the post again and take it under the standing end of the bight. Ensure that the lengths of rope do not cross or overlap each other and slip the bight over the top of the post.

  5. Step 5

Dress and tighten the hitch before applying the load. The bottom line is generally considered more secure, but you can apply the load to either end of the rope when you make a double pile hitch with this method. Because the ends can be easily mistaken for one another, you should always assume the load is on the top line.
