A double Munter friction hitch provides more friction than the simple Munter hitch. Climbers use the Munter hitch as a belay rope, but may use the double Munter hitch when descending on thinner rope.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Place the rope vertically in front of you so that the working end is on top and the standing end is on the bottom. Ensure the carabiner is wide enough to take three turns of the rope.

  2. Step 2

Make a full counter-clockwise loop with the working end under the standing end. This should result in an overhand loop to the left of the line and the working end still pointing upward. You may want to wrap the line around something such as your hand or finger.

  3. Step 3

Repeat Step 2 so that the rope now has two complete turns with the working end under the standing end.

  4. Step 4

Clip the carabiner onto the standing end below the loops with its widest part facing up and keep the clip on the same side of the rope as the loops (left in this example). Slide the carabiner up to the loops and push it halfway through the loops from below.

  5. Step 5

Open the clip of the carabiner again and move the outer portions of the loops inside the carabiner before releasing the clip. Position the turns of rope on the wide part of the carabiner and dress them before applying a load to the standing end of the rope.
