How to Rip a DVD With DVD Shrink
DVD Shrink is a free software application that allows you to "shrink" original DVDs to make your own copies and backups. DVD Shrink can circumvent most encryption that stops you from burning copies of original DVDs and then can shrink the DVD to allow you to burn it to a standard DVD-R disk. The process is relatively easy and works with burning software you probably already have.

1
Determine whether you have DVD burning software on your computer. This is software that allows you to burn DVDs to recordable disks. Most computers with a DVD burner will have software preinstalled. If you don't have this software, you need to get it to make DVD Shrink work.
-
2
Download DVD Shrink from a software download website. The download is freeware (meaning there are no fees to download it) and the download shouldn't time much time with a cable or DSL modem.

3
Install the software onto your computer.
-
4
Open the software and configure you preferences. First, select the DVD drive from which DVD Shrink will be reading. DVD Shrink will analyze the disc to determine size and compression rate.
-
5
Look for the size bar, a green bar that runs along the bottom of your software. This will tell you how much of the DVD can fit on a standard DVD-R. If part of the bar is red, the disk will need to be shrunk because the file is too large.
-
6
Decide whether to keep the whole DVD intact or keep only certain parts of the DVD, such as the film itself and the interactive features or the film and the trailers. Select the "Backup" button.
-
7
Wait for DVD Shrink to finish copying and, in some cases, compressing your movie. Now, you have a backup of the original DVD.

Tips & Warnings
Toy around with the DVD Shrink software to learn ways to splice certain aspects and scenes of the movie together or omit parts you don't like. This software is a great way to manipulate movie clips for projects or parties.
It is illegal to copy rented or borrowed DVDs, regardless of whether you're distributing or not distributing the backup.
