Crafters use a double chain knot primarily to make bracelets. It also has a functional purpose as a rope shortening technique and is the ornamental of these types of knots. The following steps will show how to make a double chain knot.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start tying the double chain knot at one end, but leave the standing end long enough to tie it off to the working end when the bracelet is complete. Be sure the line is long enough to complete the bracelet.

  2. Step 2

Make a loop so that the working end is on top of the standing end.

  3. Step 3

Bring the working end around the standing end from below and push it through the loop created in Step 2 from above. This will create a second loop, which will result in a figure-eight knot.

  4. Step 4

Repeat Steps 2 and 3 as needed to make the bracelet and tie the two ends together with a simple knot. Note that the pattern will be an interlocking series of figure-eight knots.

  5. Step 5

Use multiple strings to make a friendship bracelet with a double chain knot. This technique uses strings that are two different colors such that strings of the same color are bundled together, resulting in two separate bundles of strings.

  6. Step 6

Tie an overhand knot with the first bundle around the second bundle and then tie an overhand knot with the second bundle around the first bundle. Continue this alternating pattern as required. This will result in a double chain stitch pattern similar to the one made in Steps 1 through 4 with only one string.
