Many times you need a secure way to tie a rope onto a pole. Knot tying is also a great hobby to start with your children or grandchildren. It builds hand-eye coordination, teaches patience and encourages self-discipline. Try the following steps to tying a Boa's Bowline.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Coil a rope between your two hands. Make two and a half turns. Each turn should be at least double the diameter of the pole or stick you will be tying it on.

  2. Step 2

Take the coil in your hands by holding each of the two and half turns between your fingers so that you look like you're holding three strings of rope in your hand. Two coils will show at the back. Twist the coil once, so that it looks like a sideways figure eight.

  3. Step 3

Take the far end of each figure eight loop and fold it together like a book, make sure that you keep the eye in the center of each loop straight and that you have one large eye when you've folded it.

  4. Step 4

Slide the large eye over the end of the pole or stick that you're tying on. Be sure to keep the crossed strands at the front of the pole and knot.

  5. Step 5

Adjust the loops, if necessary, pulling on the individual strands. Carefully tighten them while keeping the shape. Once the slack has been worked out of the knot, pull on both ends to tighten the Boa Knot. The criss-cross design will hold the knot in place.

Tips & Warnings
  • This knot can be used in place of a Constrictor Knot.
  • Never use rope that shows signs of aging or wear.
  • These instructions assumes that a person has a beginner knowledge of knot tying.
