Babysitting is a challenge in and or itself. Watching a baby who has autism is even more challenging. There are learning and behavoral differences, as well as concerns over nutrition and eating.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Step1
Find out from the parents exactly what you'll need to do to handle the autistic baby. They will be your best resource because they know what soothes him, entertains him and aggravates him.
Step2
Know that the baby may cry a lot when his mother isn't there. Wait a few minutes for her to calm down. Pick her up and hold her in a soothing manner. If the baby is angry, you need to be careful because she may bite you, pull your hair or pinch you.
Step3
Place the baby on the floor to play. Being surrounded by his familiar toys will go a long way in making him feel better. Watch him to make sure he doesn't put anything dangerous in his mouth.
Step4
Entice the baby with something she likes to play with. Perhaps it's her favorite toy, blanket or bottle. If you give her a bottle, make sure to prepare it per her parents instructions. It has to be the right temperature.
Step5
Feed the baby with the food his parents left for him. Watch him as he eats to make sure he doesn't eat too fast and choke.
Step6
Play with the baby before bed time. Use her favorite toys to keep her entertained. Most babies with autism prefer toys that light up or make noise. They require stimulation.
Step7
Calm the baby down by watching a movie or reading him a book. Follow the parents guidelines for putting him to sleep. For instance, he may need a blanket with him in his crib.

Tips & Warnings

  • Follow his communication cues. The baby won't communicate the same way as children without autism. Pay attention to his body language.
  • Make sure you get phone numbers of nearby neighbors or family members, just in case something happens.
  • Never leave a baby with autism alone.
  • Don't be afraid to call his parents if the baby isn't handling your visit well.
  • Don't tickle a baby with autism very much. It can cause him to stop breathing.
