Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Embrace your geek roots and traditions. Too many comedians try to be cool or act above it all--not Patton Oswalt. He embraces and regales in his geeky past to form his unique comedy stylings.

  2. Step 2

Use common geek related material to identify with the broader audience. While some of Patton Oswalt's geek humor is obscure, he also uses material related to Star Wars and comic books. Everyone relates to the stereotypical geek portrayed in movies and television shows.

  3. Step 3

Dress the part of the geek when performing standup comedy. Patton Oswalt not only uses geek humor in his act, but also he dresses like a disaffected youth or geek even though he is nearing middle age. His dress only serves to accentuate the use of geek humor.

  4. Step 4

Talk or write about obscure geek humor in part of your act or writings. Patton Oswalt not only uses the mainstream material for his geek humor but also often throws in obscure reference to movies and books that only a true geek would understand. This will give you credibility when trying to use geek humor like Patton Oswalt if you know the specifics of geek life, rather than just the stereotypical generalities of the life.
