How to Play Lefthanded Like Phil Mikelson

Phil Mikelson is known as "Lefty" in golf circles for good reason--the golf star, who is otherwise right handed, plays with a lefthanded golf swing, making him perhaps the only professional to do so. If you look at Mikelson's record, you'll see that the lefty golf swing has paid off in full.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make use of your hands in your golf swing by learning how to adjust the position of the club to correct for an improper swing while you're mid swing, as Phil Mikelson is known for doing. This kind of finesse is difficult but has enabled Mikelson to be successful as an "unnatural" lefty golfer.

  2. Step 2

Correct hook shots like Mikelson did by bringing the club with the toe straight up when it's halfway back. In Phil Mikelson's case, this allowed him to correct for an immobile lower body and prevent him from hooking right or blocking left, as he previously did with his left handed golf swing.

  3. Step 3

Make your club release powerful and even let your right hand come off the club slightly as Phil Mikelson does on his powerful shots. To facilitate this kind of shot you need to pay attention to keeping your lower body a bit more still (but fully relaxed) so the arc of your arms more resembles a swing than a hack.

  4. Step 4

Stay centered over the ball like Phil Mikelson does so you maintain control over you swing and don't upset the balance of your stance by arching your back and spine backwards. This may require that you over-exaggerate placing your body over the ball but after a bit of practice you'll get the hang of correct spine positioning in relation to the golf ball.
