It's obviously important to know the names of the nine positions on the baseball field, but what you might not know is that each position has a number assigned to it. Learn the numbers and record them on your scorecard so you can identify who was involved in each play when you review the game later.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start numbering with the players on the diamond. The baseball pitcher's number is 1. The catcher gets number 2 since he receives the ball from the pitcher who's number 1.

  2. Step 2

Number positions in the infield. Assign number 3 to the first baseman. The second baseman receives number 4, followed by the third baseman with number 5. The shortstop gets number 6.

  3. Step 3

Assign numbers to the outfield, moving from left to right. The left fielder is number 7, the center fielder is number 8 and finally the right fielder receives number 9 on your scorecard.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you hear broadcasters say "6-4-3 double play," reviewing the numbers tells you that the shortstop gave the baseball to the second baseman, who threw it to the first baseman.
