How to Tie Down the Fenders on a Sailboat

Fenders are vital when mooring your sailboat at a dock. They protect the dock and your boat from damage. In rough water, the sailboat will bang against the dock and pilings as the waves shift and move. Damage can occur to your hull under these conditions.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Place at least two fenders along the side of the sailboat that will rest next to the dock. For medium to large sailboats, more fenders may be required. When not in use, keep the fenders stowed below or in the cockpit.

  2. Step 2

Space the fenders evenly along the side of the boat. Determine the placement based on the docking location. If there is piling next to your boat, place a fender at that point so that your boat doesn't rub or bang into the piling.

  3. Step 3

Secure each fender on the railing posts or onto a stay. To determine the placement of the knot, hang the fender over the edge of the boat until it is just above the waterline. Tie your knot to keep the fender at that position.

  4. Step 4

Tie a bowline to secure the fender line to your stay or railing post. Preface the bowline with a full wrap around the stay or railing post and then tie the bowline. This knot will be secure and hold the fender. Pull the knot tightly to lock it in place and avoid losing a fender overboard.

  5. Step 5

Deploy the fenders just before docking and stow them below once you leave the dock.
