There may come a time when the basketball game comes down to your ability to make a free throw. Some of the great scorers in basketball history would freeze at the free throw line and fail to sink that crucial basket. You can practice this skill to gain the assurance you need to come through in the clutch.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Line up your dominant foot at the top of the free throw line. If you're right-handed, place your right foot at the top of the line. Position the other foot about 12 inches behind and to the side of the dominant foot. The dot near the free throw line represents the center of the line. Determine whether you want your dominant foot on the dot, straddling it the dot or in another location. Be consistent each time you line up.

  2. Step 2

Square your shoulders to the net. Loosen your wrists by shaking them back and forth a few times while waiting for the referee to give you the ball. Wipe any sweat from your palms onto your shorts.

  3. Step 3

Dribble the basketball a few times and bend your knees to stay loose and springy.

  4. Step 4

Take a few deep breaths and relax. Shoot the basketball while making sure not to cross the free throw line until the shot hits the basket. You don't want to be called out for an illegal free throw. Also, don't forget to follow through with your shot.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice your free throw shooting. Have someone spot you for 20 free throws, and then you return the favor.
  • Avoid focusing on anything except the hoop. There are many distractions during the game, whether it's the crowd or other players. If you keep a clear head, you have a better chance of making the basket.
