When you are fencing with sabres, you must anticipate when your opponent intends to attack you so you can react accordingly. The rules of a match are quite specific, so that if you know what to look for, you can easily read an opponent's intentions.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Keep your arm bent at a 90-degree angle without extending it. This position signifies that you are not attacking. Even if you advance toward your opponent with your arm bent and not extended, your opponent would know you are not attacking.

  2. Step 2

Extend your arm if you wish to define the attack in sabre fencing. If you advance with your arm extended and the angle at which you hold the sabre more oblique, your opponent will recognize your intentions directly.

  3. Step 3

Advancing forward with your arm bent and not extended is defined as preparing for an attack. If your opponent sees you move in this manner, he can react in whatever manner he wishes to avoid getting hit. When you attack, your opponent will extend his arm also to parry your attack.
