In sabre fencing, the subtle parries are prized, for they prepare the fencer to launch an attack and move in any direction required. One maneuver you can employ to advantage during a fencing match is the parry 3, or tierce.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Prepare for the attack. Stand relaxed but alert. Hold your saber so that the tip is pointed up at an angle, with your arm bent but not completely extended. Place one foot forward—the same side as the one holding the saber—and hold your other arm relaxed and ready.

  2. Step 2

Begin the parry by turning the guard to the outside as your opponent attacks. While your opponent lunges forward to attack the arm holding the saber, catch his blade with your saber and direct it to the outside, away from your arm and body.

  3. Step 3

Keep the tierce relaxed. Don't slap your opponent's blade away. After subtly shifting his blade, launch an attack of your own or move in another direction.
