An outside fastball can be a difficult pitch for an undisciplined batter to hit. Recognizing a fastball, a batter may try to get out in front and pull the pitch, when he should be attempting to hit the outside pitch to the opposite field. Learn how to handle the low, hard ones.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Keep the bat straight. Before the pitch comes in, hold your bat at a 90ยบ angle. Pull the bat tight behind your body.

  2. Step 2

Watch the pitch for as long as you can. Good hitters look for fastballs to hit, so be patient and wait for a good pitch. The first pitch in the count and when the pitcher falls behind in the count are the best times to see fastballs.

  3. Step 3

Step into the ball. Your momentum should be heading towards the opposite field when you swing. This enables you to get the sweet spot on the bat on the ball.

  4. Step 4

Extend your arms as you swing and keep your balance. When you overextend to hit an outside fastball, it puts you off-balance, and you lose power. Swing normally and resist the urge to chase pitches outside the strike zone.

  5. Step 5

Go with the pitch, also known as hitting what the pitcher gives you. It Aim for the opposite field when you try to hit a pitch that is low and outside. While it isn't a home run pitch, you can still drive a double into the gap.

  6. Step 6

Follow through high with your swing. This keeps your hands up and helps you to drive the ball hard. When you make contact, swing through the ball, don't just meet it.
