How to Walk Backwards in Snowshoes

If conditions suddenly dictate that you must walk backward while snowshoeing, it's easy can get confused. While walking backward is difficult, it can be done safely for short distances. Remember these techniques to keep yourself oriented.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Raise your foot high as if you were walking forward. Use your poles to maintain balance. Most snowshoeing injuries occur as a result of falls, so keep your knees slightly bent to lower your center of gravity.
Step2
Swing your foot forward slightly to compensate for the backward swing of your snowshoe. Allow the kick to loosen the snow on your snowshoe. This step requires practice to perform smoothly.
Step3
Step back far enough to clear the back of your other snowshoe. Backward tracks will look somewhat pigeon toed, with the fronts of the shoes turned outward.

Tips & Warnings

  • It may help to think of snowshoeing as similar to biking, except that walking in snowshoes requires more foot and ankle movement.
