Step 1
Find a tall chair. You should be able to sit on the chair as your feet rest on the foot pegs while remaining parallel to the ground.
-
Step 2
Place the chair 12 inches from a wall. If you're right-handed, the right side of the chair should be parallel to the wall. Reverse the position if you're left-handed.
-
Step 3
Position your stilts on the ground in front of you. Place your feet upon the foot pegs. Strap on the stilts if your type has safety straps. Fasten the straps snugly, but not tightly.
-
Step 4
Hold your feet evenly centered on the foot pegs, facing forward. If you have stick stilts, move your legs close enough to the chair so you can hold your feet parallel to the ground while balancing the stilts against this edge of the chair. This maneuver may take a few tries.
-
Step 5
Reach across and place one hand on the wall. If applicable, grasp your stick stilt with your free hand. Shift your weight from the chair to mount the stilt pegs slowly. For stick stilts, don't allow let free stilt (the one that belongs to the hand you have on the wall) pitch forward.
-
Step 6
Remove your hand from the wall. Steady yourself first by leaning your upper arm against the wall if necessary. If you have stick stilts, grasp the second grab handle. Remain still until you gain your balance.
