How to Make a Scrunchy
Making a hair scrunchy is a good project for novice sewers. You can make scrunchies from any fabric at all, so it's a good way to use scraps or old clothing. Adjust the fullness for your project by using more or less material.
Things You'll Need
- 7-inch elastic band
- 1 by 40-inch fabric square
- Needle
- Thread
- Scissors
- Safety pin

1
Cut out a piece of fabric 40-inches long and 1-inch wide. Fold it in half lengthwise and stitch the top edge closed, so you end up with a rectangle piece that's 40-inches long and 1/2-inch wide. Leave the ends of the rectangle open.

2
Cut a 7-inch section of elastic. Fasten a safety pin through one end of the elastic and use it to thread the elastic through the rectangle you made in Step 1. The safety pin gives you something to hold on to as you string the elastic through the material.

3
Scrunch the fabric away from both ends of the elastic. Then stitch the elastic closed into a full circle.
-
4
Tuck the ends of the fabric inside of each end so it can work with a clean edge. Stitch the scrunchy shut directly across the elastic band.
-
5
Distribute the fabric evenly around the elastic band to shape your hair scrunchy. Trim away any threads from your sewing and fluff your scrunchy.
