Food trays are used to carry meals to people, but painting the tray can give the implement a new utility. Artists paint, decoupage and carve food trays into interesting designs which they can coordinate them with particular rooms.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Food tray
  • Water
  • Cleaner
  • Towel
  • Grease or regular pencil
  • Paints and brushes
  • Paper towel
  1. Step 1

Clean the tray with a damp towel. If there are sticky areas or labels stuck to its surface use a mild household cleanser. Allow the tray to dry completely.

  2. Step 2

Draw or trace your pattern onto the tray with the pencil. The pattern should be centered.

  3. Step 3

Paint the fill colors in the design with acrylic paint, which will not flake or taint your food. The fill colors compose most of each object. For example, for an apple the fill color would be the red (or green) of the fruit, not the outlines. Allow the fill color to dry before you move on.

  4. Step 4

Add the details and outlines of each object. Add lines in and around the fill color to bring out the color. Allow the paint to dry.

  5. Step 5

Paint shadows and light into the pattern. These give the object shape and depth.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a sealant over the paint if the food tray will be exposed to liquid on a regular basis. Sealant is available in craft and paint supply stores. Buy non-toxic sealant if the tray is meant to come into contact with food.
